Last week one of my followers on Instagram reached out to me and asked me how to apply her foundation. She said although she isn’t using a full coverage foundation, her makeup always comes out looking cakey. For her everyday look she’d prefer a more natural looking finish. So I asked her 3 questions about her process: Are you prepping and priming your skin before makeup application? Does the foundation you’re wearing match your skin type?(Learn more about choosing the best foundation here) Lastly, what type of foundation brush are you using? All 3 of these things are important, but in today’s post we’re going to focus on the tools needed for flawless foundation.

In specific we’re going to focus on 3 makeup tools for flawless foundation application. Having the right makeup tools not only helps with makeup application but it also will save lots of time. When it comes to foundation application there are a few different makeup tools that you can use each one giving you a different outcome.

Beauty Blender

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge - Makeup Sponges | Real ...

A beauty blender is an egg shaped makeup sponge that can be used to apply foundation. It’s one of my favorite makeup tools for a “natural” everyday makeup look. For a natural everyday flawless face start with a wet beauty blender, make sure to squeeze out excess water. When the beauty blender gets large it absorbs a smaller amount of foundation saving you product and not applying so much foundation to skin. Then you want to use beauty blender and lightly tap and press it into the skin. This technique will give the skin a natural finish. One of my favorite beauty blenders is the one by Real Techniques. I love the way one side is flat to easily fit into the contours of the face.

Stippling Foundation Brush

Similar to a beauty blender a stippling brush presses or stipples the foundation into the skin. Stippling brushes have white synthetic hair fibers & black/brown hair  fibers. The synthetic hairs help with product pick up and placement on your face. The darker natural hair brushes help with stippling the foundation onto skin. Both of these brush hairs combined leaves skin with a perfect airbrushed finished. If you prefer brushes to beauty blenders then this is the brush for you. Here’s some of my favorite stippling brushes:

Sigma F80 Stippling Foundation Brush

ELF Ultimate Blending Brush

MAC 132 Duo Fibre Brush

Flat Foundation Brush

This type of foundation brush is perfect is you desire a full coverage look. Unlike stippling brushes flat foundation brushes are made entirely with synthetic brushes. Synthetic brushes don’t hold foundation like stippling brushes, so more foundation goes on the skin. When you use this type of brush to apply foundation you’re definitely going to have a glam foundation finish. Which is perfect for special occasions or on days when you just feel like being extra. Here are a few of my favorites:

NYX Foundation Brush

Wet N Wild Foundation Brush

Which brush do you use to apply your foundation? If you’re still unsure about which to makeup tool to use, think about the type of look you’re going for. If you want a more natural finish try a beauty blender or stippling brush. For a more glam, carpet ready finish try a flat foundation brush. There’s nothing wrong with using more than one type of makeup tool for your foundation. Like applying your foundation with a flat foundation brush and then buffing it out with a beauty blender. As you continue to grow on your makeup journey you’ll find that you’ll start creating your own techniques. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try out new brushes.
